I regard cryptocurrency as "broken by design" and "harmful if used as intended”. Snowden’s piece makes a positive case, though I think it amounts to "world is already broken”. One can at least understand his point of view.

Such an informative piece on what cryptocurrencies are. Highly recommend this piece, as it seems we are at the very beginning of the blockchain being implemented on a "mainstream" level.

the hard truth is that the only thing that gives cryptocurrencies value is the belief of a large population in their usefulness as a means of exchange.

This is the type of article, that makes me ponder if I should go down a rabbit hole to understand the history of money.. in the first place.

Thanks for the scouting on this one. Snowden must be one of the most thoughtful people. being in a limbo with no real future plans to make. I respect what sacrifices he has made by standing on his soapbox and saying what is needed to be heard.

The real question is not “what is a blockchain,” but “how can it be used?” And that gets back to what we started on: trust. We live in a world where everyone is lying about everything, with even ordinary teens on Instagram agonizing over how best to project a lifestyle they don’t actually have. People get different search results for the same query. Everything requires trust; at the same time nothing deserves it.
