OMG, this was an edge of your seat kind of read. So many threads, possibilities. Overall, I felt sick to my stomach - such regret! I would imagine a very difficult thing to let go of. So why not blame your wife?!!!!!!!!!!
I read this hoping I’d understand Bitcoin but I’m as much in the dark as ever. I don’t understand how it has any value. The degree to which this guy was willing to go to recover his fortune really blew my mind as much as Bitcoin itself!!
It's a bit like gold. Gold has a few uses (electronics, jewelry), as does BItcoin (buying drugs, mostly), but the real value of both comes from their limited supply, which creates a bubble, which attracts more investors, which increases value, and so on.
Really great article! I could swear I read about this guy back in 2013 but he's definitely not the only one who has accidentally thrown away a fortune of Bitcoin. I can't believe how long his saga has dragged on for and the amount of pushback he's received from the city.
It's crazy to think it all might have been avoided if he wasn't worried about the embarrassment he might face if he immediately went chasing after the hard drive at the dump. The advice from the guy who bought the two pizzas with 10,000 BTC is wise and I'm glad he's apparently at peace, but his coins are gone forever. I don't know how one could move on knowing that those ones and zeros might still be recoverable.
Maybe some degree of jealousy influenced the city council's repeated decisions to not approve any plans? Or possibly, that if the city condoned it, it would indirectly also condone Bitcoin itself, as long as it can make a profit. I can see how that would raise government opposition. A better explanation of their position would've been good.

Me neither. Crazy how such a "What If?" can apparently destroy a life though. Sometimes just not having something makes you richer than once having had it, and then having lost it.

Good write up. A nice lesson in the power of money to ruin happiness, rather than create it.
