My son and I feel like we have a neighborhood full of friends - our doormen, the super next door, the women at the grocery check-out, the polyglot who works selling coffee in the bodega, the owner of the laundromat who offered to let my son do his homework there when I had to go back to the office during Covid. I feel like there are many eyes on him, helping to keep him safe. And he feels that care and protection as we make our rounds on the block.

My mother was a master of connection and conversation. As a child I was always amazed at how easily she engaged with people. She had an openness about her, a curiosity and warmth that allowed these interactions to unfold with ease and grace. Her message of trust and optimism was absorbed by me and I certainly have enjoyed talking to strangers my entire life. It just seems natural, I don’t even have to think about it. It has been her gift that keeps on giving.
