The US legal system is too easily weaponized. Here, by teenage girls. It needs to focus on defending rights of all people.

I wonder how the story would’ve played out if he hadn’t taken that initial plea deal. The system forces that “choice” so hard on you that innocent people take it and never get true justice

Good catch. I missed that detail (about the initial plea deal) in my first reading.

It's heartbreaking that this part of our culture is affecting even children now.

These kind of false accusations do such a disservice certainly to the young man involved but also to other girls and women who are assaulted. Girls and women who have come forward about sexual assault are often vilified in court by the defense and traumatized again. I can also imagine how totally traumatizing this whole series of events were to this young man and his family. I think his family does deserve some kind of legal redress. I didn’t think it helpful to throw Brett Kavanaugh in at the end of the article. An investigation was never allowed to really go forward and his accuser certainly appeared to be legitimate.

I agree! And it was irresponsible for the author to mention Brett Kavanaugh in this article, as I found Dr. Christine Blasey Ford’s testimony credible. The investigation seemed thwarted from the start.

Wow, this is heartbreaking on so many levels. I can’t believe these girls are not going to be held accountable for their lying and the pain and suffering this young man and his family endured. Without penalties in place for something so egregious, what’s to prevent this from happening again? These girls also did a horrific disservice to all the women who are legitimately sexually assaulted and traumatized. I completely understand the young man’s family hiring a lawyer.
