      Great. I wonder what it would have been like to read this particular sentence in 2017, when it was published:

      SARS got more attention than the massive decline in HIV mortality.

      Expecting things to be bad is the best way to be pleasantly surprised when they’re not. Which is something to be optimistic about.

      I’ve always believed that it’s best to prepare for the worst because that’s harder to deal with. Hope for the best but always, always, always be ready for the negative possibilities.

      This is a really excellent reminder of just how prone we are to pessimism as a default perspective. There's the concept of a reality check but an optimism check might be just as important and in some cases might even be the same thing.
