This project mostly just pissed me off that there was an Elif Shafak book I'd never get to read

Otherwise, this is kind of a slap to the optimist in me that thinks (hopes?) we wont have wiped ourselves off the face of the Earth in 100 years. uh…TBD?

Such a weird project, interesting, but weird

This seems like a really awesome project but I found the political analysis to be forced, reductive, and boring.

The Future Library is real in that there are books being written for it and there are trees growing to fuel its creation. But its politics are imaginary.

What politics? I just read this article and then skimmed it again. From what I can tell its politics are derived from the fact that it is located in a place and consists of things. If the political analysis can apply to any non-transient Norwegian art project made of physical materials than I feel like it's pretty pointless. It shouldn't be a sin to focus on the aesthetics of a work of art because problems exist in the world.

THE OPTIMISM OF ART feeds off the pessimism of ecocide

      Citation needed. Good lord!

Haha! OMG, you made the citation! I need to reread it myself, as I was not picking up on the politics! I guess I was SO wowed by how exciting all this information was to me, that the other did not register! Perhaps my reading needs to be more critical in nature. I’m much more distracted by the candy and not the stranger who is offering it!

I wasn’t sure how to feel while reading this, it took a critical political stance, but also made it possible to become enamored by the initiatives. Critical reading is difficult, I read/saw/heard once that our natural way of comprehending statements is to first read them as truth. We can only reconsider (with effort) once we grasped their meaning. So in a passive mood, it’s nice to read the counter-arguments of someone who has done that thinking already :)

One of the most interesting, thought provoking articles I have read on Readup. Just a sample. “It is an apt description of The Future Library, which grafts an environmental taboo onto an artistic one: trees that are planted to be cut down; books that are written, not to be read.” The “Ark of Literature” the “Svalbard Global Seed Vault” and time capsules containing “techno fossils” are mind blowing installations. Beyond a 10, a must read!
