Uber has also argued that its core business is technology, not rides, and therefore drivers are not a key part of its business.
But will they gain profit if these same drivers are not working for/with them? It's interesting how quickly they threw them under the bus in order to 'cut costs'.

The word "disingenuous' was surely invented for this statement. I'd be happy to pay a bit more for a ride if it helped the drivers. How much the rates would have to go up is an interesting question though.
I now see the initial inspiration for bringing AB5 to life. I sure hope they get what they want out of this, because they have messed things up for a ton of CA freelancers in the process with AB5, especially writers & journos.
I use Lyft and am glad the services exist and would gladly pay a bit extra so the drivers had a better quality of life. It seems like we were pretending that our unemployment was just hunky dory, when we were actually hiding a ton of it with gig work. Here we go again with C19 being the spotlight for broken systems. wheee!
What would the technology be without the drivers? People voluntarily sharing their locations...? There would be no service and/or product.

Right. Drivers are not a key part... Are you sure? 😂
