When you are young, you think that aging happens to other people, never you! What I have come to learn is that there is so much to glean from the elderly, who we as a society tend to dismiss. And some of that is their fault if they’re cranky and intolerant of the young. I have worked in hospice and found such joy in listening to their stories. Someday I would love to volunteer in a nursing home and provide an activity that would allow the residents to tell their stories. I know from experience that it is shocking how interesting and cool these white haired, wrinkled individuals are.

Great read! I never considered how a rent-controlled apartment could become an inescapable trap the older you get. Also I'd love to read another 15 minute long article that's just an interview with Mr. Jones.

I asked him when in his life he was happiest?

“Right now,” he said without hesitation. “I have health problems, but it’s been going on a long time, so it’s secondary. But I think happiness really is what’s going on at a particular time. I used to think happiness was something that somebody brought to you. But happiness, as opposed to enjoyment, is when you are doing something and you are elated.”

She added: “I’m not the elderly person keeping the money in the quilt or the refrigerator. I like to spend.”
