When you are young, you think that aging happens to other people, never you! What I have come to learn is that there is so much to glean from the elderly, who we as a society tend to dismiss. And some of that is their fault if they’re cranky and intolerant of the young. I have worked in hospice and found such joy in listening to their stories. Someday I would love to volunteer in a nursing home and provide an activity that would allow the residents to tell their stories. I know from experience that it is shocking how interesting and cool these white haired, wrinkled individuals are.
Great read! I never considered how a rent-controlled apartment could become an inescapable trap the older you get. Also I'd love to read another 15 minute long article that's just an interview with Mr. Jones.
“Right now,” he said without hesitation. “I have health problems, but it’s been going on a long time, so it’s secondary. But I think happiness really is what’s going on at a particular time. I used to think happiness was something that somebody brought to you. But happiness, as opposed to enjoyment, is when you are doing something and you are elated.”
She added: “I’m not the elderly person keeping the money in the quilt or the refrigerator. I like to spend.”
