I think this is an excellent analysis. Surprising, disturbing, and maybe even somewhat obvious when you stop to think about it.

The Daily Show was huge when I was in high school in the early 2000s. I've been a big fan of Stewart since then but there was always an uncomfortable tension between the seriousness of his crusade and his refusal to take himself seriously. When confronted, his default move was to revert to clown mode but he made an exception when he broke character and actually lobbied for the 9/11 first responders healthcare bill.

I'd love to know what he thinks about this article and I'm very curious to see what he ends up doing next. His new show was canceled due to "creative differences" with Apple less than two weeks after this article was published. I doubt we've heard the last of him.

Really well written and I was carried along with interest and nostalgia. I remember The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. I was not necessarily an ardent fan, as satire and snarkiness are not appealing to me. However, it was a ground breaking show in format, content and live interviews that used actual filmed clips as proof of facts. What did capture my attention and respect was the John Stewart I saw post 9/11. Gone was the comedic demeanor and what emerged was a courageous man on a challenging, heart driven mission. Stewart tirelessly advocated for the rights of first responders whose health was severely compromised by all the toxic debris. He was driven, focused and it showed on his haggard, exhausted face. I now feel a desire to see his new show on Apple + - The Problem With John Stewart. I’m so curious what he is up to now.
