Although I don’t wish to promote a misogynistic stereotype, I have to say that my first thought while reading this was lulz, Pence got cucked.

It must be so embarrassing to have your final words at the apex of your career be my presence here is ceremonial. That’s rough.

I really appreciate the historical and judicial references here. It's reassuring in a way to be reminded that our system of government has had to deal with contested elections before and that despite all the toxic partisanship the overwhelming majority of those in congress are committed to upholding the Constitution in this instance at least.

In 1877 congress decided the 1876 presidential election in favor of Hayes over Tilden because of the widespread voter fraud in Florida. Hayes was given the electoral votes needed to win by 1 vote. In return, federal troops were removed from the south. White southerners controlled the south again and African Americans were denied the vote, threatened, intimidated, harassed, and killed by groups against them. This “compromise” set the country back 100 years.
