I'm not super impressed with this piece. Correlation is not causation. Things go in and out of popularity. Books and series that were all the rage often fade into obscurity, look up some of the most popular series from any decade and see how many you recognize.

That being said all of these franchises are still very popular. Harry Potter, Parks and Rec, and Hamilton. Two of those are billion dollar properties, the other remains one of the most streamed shows on peacock.

To me this is a chirp escaping from the echo chamber. I have no doubt that among the author's friends these series are so cringe, and no doubt the subset of a subset of a subset of people who use twitter all agree....but that isn't most people. These three remain very popular and aren't tied to any particular political figure.

To address a few other ideas in the piece...

JK Rowling is an author, Harry Potter is a literary and film series. I don't know her politics because I don't need to. If I gave up the art of all the terrible people in the world, or the people with whom I disagreed (those shouldn't be the same people), I wouldn't enjoy any art.

Hamilton. Any piece of historical fiction or reproduction has to be selective. Even non-fiction histories have to leave vast amounts of information out. What do we have against earnestness? I think part, and just part, of what is driving the 'cringe' here is that something that used to belong to the wealthy liberal chic, is now accessible to anyone with Disney Plus (I know it isn't the same as seeing the original stage production -but you get the idea). These are people saying in effect, I liked Hamilton before it was cool, now that you like it - there must be something wrong with it.
