Foldable phones — which transform from a normal-sized smartphone slab into something much more like a tablet — will have their place. But flip phones should be the norm, and they should be the norm starting right about now.
Wait, I'm confused. What's the difference between a foldable phone and a flip phone?
The second, and maybe more important, is battery life. Because you’re using the smaller screen some of the time rather than lighting up all six-plus inches of display, all that incessant checking of your phone won’t kill the battery so quickly.
I was on a 4 day home guard exercise last week, and my phone died on the morning of the 3rd day. Not a wall socket within a kilometer's range, and stupid me forgot to bring my power bank.
I definitely see some appeal to these devices, but with all the compromises and the ridiculous prices of early models, I was turned off early and haven't bothered look into them again since. Maybe I'll get one in 10 years or so when they've matured and the cost has come down.
But would the smaller outer screen have helped with the main phone functions during the exercise?

I believe the “foldable phone” has a candy bar shape when closed, and opens sideways like a book into a square-ish tablet size. The “flip phone” has a smaller square-ish form when closed, and opens from the top into a normal candybar size.

Makes sense! Sounds like most people’s reaction to the Vision Pro.
But I don’t want to see all my notifications or that ultra-enticing TikTok icon every time I just want to check the time. A flip phone offers just enough friction in opening the thing up that I’m much more likely to keep it closed. It’s like the world’s most crackable lock, which is actually sort of perfect.
I'll keep an eye out for these. A friend also showed me his side-foldable phone/tablet recently. It looked like it would make for a very convenient portable reading device.

I mostly just needed the clock, to know when it was time to wake up the next person for guard duty. :-p
OK, good arguments. Especially:
