Fantastic descriptive writing. I can so relate to this - to learning about insects so as not to be so quick to kill them. Lately, I find myself talking to spiders, warning them to leave or else. I actually get down to their level and try to make “eye” contact. It works sometimes and it thrills me. I also do the catch and release method, although I can easily freak out if the bug escapes and crawls on my hand. That’s usually a scream and far flung journey for the insect. We get carpenter bees every year. I have killed them because they dive bomb us upon entering our garage. But now, knowing them more intimately, I will leave them be.
