Ratings is something I think about quite a bit. The rating system here is fairly intuitive and straight forward.
"Would you recommend this article to others?" 1-10, where 1 means no and 10 means yes. I've found that my most used rating is 8, which means I think most people (but not all people) would find this interesting. I very rarely rate something lower than 6, because I struggle to even finish reading things that don't interest me. And that's one of the great features of this site; that we actually have to finish reading something before we can vote! But it does probably result in articles getting higher average ratings than they deserve. One interesting quirk of the voting system here is that even a negative rating (5 or lower) will add to the article's score and increase its visibility, which may be another reason for users to refrain from voting on articles they didn't like.
