Well worth the read for the musings on Debord's spectacle alone. That part really resonated and made me want to read the book which I can't believe was written in 1967.
The sports analogy lost me for a bit though. I think automatic referee systems are unequivocally a good thing and don't understand how anyone could argue otherwise.
Also LLMs are kind of the opposite of an automatic line calling system. Sure there's always some margin of error but the goal is to make those systems as predictable and deterministic as possible.
With LLMs it's kind of the opposite. These things are not calculators. They're at their most useful when they're unpredictable so you do need a human calling the shots at some point.
I think a lot of the malaise is just not knowing how many humans will be needed and in what capacity. Everything will continue to be up in the air until the model capability plateaus and the cost of using LLMs stops being subsidized by investors.
In this AI era, hobbies are saviours, keep reading, writing, go for a walk, etc, do something to keep you alive in this monotonous AI-induced routine.
