I enjoyed reading The Last Queen, a historical fiction novel about the mother of Dalip Singh, who is also mentioned here.
Duleep Singh. Singh, too, had converted to Christianity and settled in the United Kingdom after the British deposed him from the Sikh Empire in 1843.
Dalip/Duleep was deposed as a child in Punjab, and his mother was soon after separated from him and imprisoned, if I remember correctly, because she encouraged resistance to the British rule. After this, he was taken to the UK. The last part of the novel concerns their reuniting later in life, and Dalip’s struggle when his largely British and Christian upbringing clashed with his Punjabi ancestry and early childhood. It must have been a very painful situation to live through!
What a strange response to the request of ending slavery!
Interesting topic, but the article could have been much longer, going into more detail about these people.
