The sports world is rife with athletic depression. There is a cost to being one of the best. Michael Phelps is a great example. The endless hours in the pool training, 28 Olympic medals, 23 gold. I could not believe he kept swimming year after year - how many more medals did he need? What was the point? When he came out about his depression, I was not surprised but I was relieved. For him and all the others who kept their depression a secret. Simone Biles is another. Perfection is such a curse, an impossible standard to maintain. I was so proud of her this year, saving herself, valuing her mental/physical health over pleasing the masses. Athletes inspire and we need to embrace them fully, especially when they are vulnerable.
