Keep fighting the good fight!
There’s no possible way I would have read this many articles the past 3-4 years. Proud of the team for making a tough decision & will continue to support in the coming future 🙏🏻
Thanks for staying active on Readup too! It didn’t go unnoticed 👀 I think you’re Readup’s de facto crypto- and music influencer now.
I've long thought that your main value propositions were the community recommendations and the focused reading enrironment that forces a person to read deeply rather than skim. To be honest, I was rather dismayed when you put your resources towards the writer marketplace. Don't get me wrong, it's a beautiful vision. But considering your users are people who want to deeply engage with content, I thought your effort should go towards adding functionality that allow people to do that better. I haven't spent as much time on Readup lately as I did at the beginning. And when I do, I sometimes find myself taking the articles I find here and opening them in other apps to read. The reason is that Readup is missing the core features I need to read deeply: highlighting and annotating. This is a community of people who read long articles on Zettlekasten for fun! If only the app allowed us to read deeply AND highlight.
I still come back here every now and then. I do love the community curation and conversation. But it can't make it my main app until it supports highlights (and Android).
Hey Daniel, I appreciate you leaving this comment. Readup made a big and bold bet on a greater vision for online journalism. We wanted to bring a snippet of that vision into reality by launching the marketplace on our very constrained resources, in order to procure investment. And yes, we intentionally ignored immediate reader asks in order to launch the marketplace. But the bet didn’t work out!
We’re back to square one now. I feel your pains: I’m often using Notion besides Readup to highlight in articles, and I would love an Android app as well. Rest assured that everyone involved in Readup now is only focussing on the reader experience.
Getting Readup out for Android this year still is a realistic goal, especially now that we removed the need for complex financial integrations. It should not require much additional work, and I aim to work on that in my free time. Adding highlights too (and search, and lists, and tags/organization, …) would be awesome, and I hope we can gather the contributor power to pull it off.
Great! I still love the app for the focused reading experience. I just was getting tired having to swap back and forth between apps and then find my place in the second app to highlight. I’m looking forward to trying the Android app!
Really great post, @thorgalle! This is certainly a bittersweet announcement and not the outcome that we had hoped for, but I am genuinely excited to help take Readup in this new (and in some ways old) direction.
Thanks Jeff! Without you, Readup would not have existed, and without you, Readup could likely not continue today. I really appreciate you staying involved where needed. It’s a massive service to the whole community.
Thor, thanks for keeping Readup alive! I will certainly contribute in all ways possible because I also believe in Readup. The reason being, the community has changed me. Made me see different perspectives, think before responding, even how to express myself. It’s been like keeping a journal, of sorts, a daily practice. Coffee and Readup each morning. There are times I read an article and it stays with me for days. Reading is right up there with a stellar movie, exciting travel, excellent dining and conversations. I’m so looking forward to all the possibilities that await!
I'm glad to read that Pegeen, I can relate to your experience! Sometimes my reading habit fades, but it always comes back. And when it does, it feels rewarding.
